Athens has a unique ability to conceal small treasures in the most unexpected places. One such example is the arcade on Lekka Street, home to Geco Athens, located on the ground floor of the Gatsby Hotel. Set within an elegant interwar building with clear Art Deco influences, Geco immediately conveys a sense of understated luxury. Its maximalist character, the bold interplay of grey and gold, the ornate mirrors and the atmospheric lighting create a setting that feels almost cinematic. Yet the eye is inevitably drawn to the imposing 25-metre white marble bar that dominates the room, positioned opposite an open kitchen in full flow. It is, quite possibly, the longest bar in Athens at the moment.

This bar operates as far more than a point of service; it is the true nucleus of Geco. It is, quite simply, the only place to sit when exploring the cocktail offering. The list presents drinks defined by complexity, balance and clarity of flavour. Among the standouts is Metamorphosis, a harmonious blend of gin with mastiha, honey, mandarin cordial, yoghurt and tropical caviar. Equally compelling is Wild Transition, where tequila blanco meets an umami-driven spicy cordial, tomato liqueur and a dusting of tajín. For those drawn to aged spirits, Broken Mirror stands out as a particularly accomplished serve, built around a carefully constructed rum blend, banana liqueur and passionola cordial.

This level of cocktail culture calls for an equally accomplished culinary counterpart. Geco delivers with an excellent bar food menu that elevates street food into a premium experience of sharing and indulgence. Watching the open kitchen in constant motion, I began with the much-talked-about Iberico gyros. It is a dish full of flavour, with beautifully crisped meat, served alongside delicate handmade oil-brushed flatbreads, pickled onion, cherry tomatoes and cooling yoghurt. The street food approach continues with the same attention to the quality of ingredients throughout. Mini burgers and bite-sized souvlaki, prepared with Black Angus cuts or tender chicken, further demonstrate how exceptional produce can elevate even the simplest formats.
Each dish on the bar menu is thoughtfully designed to stand alongside the premium spirits and cocktails, reinforcing the bar’s overall dynamic. As the evening unfolds, the space transforms. The lighting softens, the tempo of the music rises, and Geco fully reveals its all-day versatility. It is genuinely rare to encounter a venue that manages to combine urban luxury, a high level of gastronomy, even in its more casual offerings, and a lively sense of entertainment with such consistency. A cosmopolitan destination that has, without question, secured a loyal following, something clearly reflected in the need to book several days in advance.
