Kostas Vriniotis has revived the rare variety of Evia Vradiano, and Iama is the cuvée that showcases its unique character most prominently. RATING: 7,5 / 10.

Situated in the tranquil village of Yaltra, the Vriniotis winery has successfully placed northern Evia on the wine map. Kostas Vriniotis carries on the family tradition, infusing  it with a distinct dynamism.

Without disparaging the winery`s overall experience, Vryniotis is particularly identified with Vradiano, a rare red varietal from Evia. He was the first to recognise the potential of this relatively pale, tender grape and now uses it to produce red, rosé, and sweet wines.

Iama Red is undoubtedly the cuvée that allows us to appreciate Vradiano more than any other, as the careful maceration combined with 12 months of barrel aging brings out its defining characteristics.

Gentleness is the first word that comes to mind when examining this Vradiano in the glass, which displays a dark ruby colour and a distinctive aromatic freshness. The nose is dense yet ethereal, with the 400-metre altitude of the Vradiano vineyard imparting a freshness reminiscent of wild cherry, sour cherry, cassis, and herbs, complemented by a good dose of subtle oak.

On the palate, it has a medium body and excellent balance, characterised by serene proportions rather than intense sour-sweet contrasts. However, this tranquility is disrupted by a finish that is notably woody and tannic. With experience tasting other reds in the range and considering the moderate tannic potential of the variety, it seems the barrel aging is primarily responsibly for this assertiveness. Nevertheless, those who allow the wine to rest in their cellar for 2-4 years will find this characteristic significantly softened.

Although relatively light, Iama benefits from being served in a large closed tulip glass, with the Riedel Vinum Syrah and at a temperature of 15-17°C to enhance its aromatic and flavour profiles. A beef fillet would make a good pairing, but for those seeking something more moderate, a gioulbasi or a Chaniotiki meat tart would also be excellent options.

While the Iama Red may have a slightly disruptive finish, it is certainly worth trying—even for immediate enjoyment. The combination of its varietal rarity and a reasonable price of €15 makes it a standout recommendation, especially with the complete freshness of its dense nose.

Rating: 7.5/10.
