  • FROM LARISSA TO THEMISTOKLEOUS: ERLI BRINGS AUTHENTIC HOSPITALITY IN THE HEART OF ATHENS” | The Bars

Athens’ all-day bar scene often feels like a constant pursuit of impact, where design tends to overshadow substance. There are, however, places that do not need to raise their voice to stand out. Erli, at the junction of Themistokleous with Gravias and Kleisovis, is precisely one such case.

This is not a project born of a calculated business plan, but of the natural desire of four friends to give shape to a shared understanding of hospitality. Among them is Michalis, someone I first encountered in the more serious bars of Larissa, before his path led him to the major hotel bars of Athens and the cosmopolitan demands of Mykonos. That accumulated experience, the discipline of hotel-level service and the adaptability required by high-end tourism, have ultimately found their home in this corner of Exarchia.

Stepping into Erli, the first impression is one of solidity and intent. Despite its compact size, the layout, built around a wraparound counter, creates a sense of movement that flows naturally out onto the street. Here, inside and outside become one, echoing the feel of authentic bars in Europe’s major cities. The name, a clever take on “Early”, works almost as a manifesto: at Erli, there is no wrong time to visit. From early morning, the air fills with the aromas of coffee from Very Coffee Beans, while freshly baked croissants and cookies emerging from the kitchen set the pace in a neighbourhood that rarely sleeps.

However, the true charm of the place reveals itself as the day unfolds. Its food offering, conceived along tapas-style lines that encourage sharing, holds its own alongside any of the city’s wine bars. The bruschetta with brie and onion chutney strikes a pleasing balance between richness and sweetness, while the mini tartare burger delivers an unexpected burst of flavour.

Sommelier Stefanos Triantafyllidis has curated a list of 23 labels from both the Greek and international vineyard, offering a selection to suit a wide range of palates. On the cocktail side, Michalis’ experience is evident. The seven signature drinks are essentially twists on classics, executed with the precision expected of a contemporary bar. The Kosmos, a Cosmopolitan infused with blackcurrant notes, feels almost elegant in its expression, while their Piña Colada, with coffee beans and toasted almonds, is a reworking that moves well beyond the clichés of the tiki repertoire.

Erli manages something not easily achieved: it functions both as a focused bar and a genuinely welcoming hangout. With music that shifts in line with the mood of the room and an aesthetic that acknowledges the heritage of Exarchia without leaning on it, Michalis and his partners have created a space where quality is a given and hospitality feels personal. Even the bar’s restroom, arguably one of the most distinctive in Athens, serves as a quiet reminder that at Erli, attention to detail is paramount.
